Friend,
The Voting Rights Act of 1965 is one of the most essential pieces of legislation for our democracy. Its passage and impact is a testament to the blood, sweat, and tears of so many who dedicated their lives to justice -- people such as the late John Lewis.
But in recent years, Republicans have waged a sustained assault on the right to vote. We've seen voter ID laws passed by far too many states, purges of voter rolls, and cut-backs to early voting. And in a disastrous 2013 ruling, a conservative majority on the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act.
Now, as we experience renewed awareness about the racial inequities in our society -- and we face a systematic effort by Donald Trump and his enablers to limit voting in the 2020 election -- it is imperative that we stand up for the right to vote.
Jennifer and House Democrats voted to restore the Voting Rights Act eight months ago. But like so many necessary pieces of legislation, it has gathered dust on Mitch McConnell's desk in the Senate.
This is a historic moment for Black women; what Shirley Chisholm started 48 years ago has brought us here. And in Senator Harris, we have a true fighter for our values.
We're standing together today to say: no more. Help us get 20,000 signatures to demand that Mitch McConnell do what's right for the country and pass a renewed Voting Rights Act.
John Lewis spent his entire life fighting so that the right to vote would never be infringed on any American citizen. From the streets of Selma to the halls of Congress, he knew that this was his mission -- and there is no better way to honor his legacy than to keep up his fight.
Thank you,
Team Wexton
