It’s President Barack Obama.
I’m reaching out to you today with a message I hoped I’d never have to deliver.
In a stunning decision, the Supreme Court has effectively gutted the Voting Rights Act – striking down one of our nation’s bedrock laws protecting free and fair elections for every American, regardless of race.
This has allowed Republican-controlled state legislatures to move at an alarming pace to dismantle districts where minority racial groups make up the majority of voters – all to provide a boost to the GOP’s chances of retaining the House majority in this year’s midterms.
When former Congressman John Lewis and Civil Rights leaders bravely led marchers across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama – where they were brutally attacked on 'Bloody Sunday' – they did it to demand equal voting rights for Black citizens across the South.
The outcry and shock prompted President Johnson and Congress to pass the landmark legislation that is the Voting Rights Act – moving us closer to the promise of democracy for millions of disenfranchised Americans.
But, the rights and freedoms fought for then are now under threat.
As long as the Republican Party maintains total control of government, generations of hard-fought progress hang in the balance.
