MP’s UPDATE May 2026 RUTH CADBURY MP

COUNCIL ELECTION RESULTS In Hounslow, I am pleased Labour has held the council with a majority. Reform gained seats for the first time and the Tories gained seats in the centre of the borough. For constituents living in Whitton ward in Richmond, the Lib Dems won every seat on Richmond upon Thames London Borough Council.

ANTI-SEMITIC ATTACKS Jewish communities in North London, Manchester and elsewhere are under attack every week. Elected politicians have a duty to speak out against the poison of antisemitism and to ensure that actions are taken as a priority. I welcome that the Mayor of London, the Met Commissioner and the Home Secretary have confirmed that additional policing will be in place, and that the Government are actively exploring further options. We must acknowledge the messages of hate that Jews are experiencing are not unlinked to these attacks. Criticising Netanyahu and the government of Israel for their actions in Gaza and the OPT, supporting Palestinian nationalism, wanting the war to end and advocating for peace equality and dignity for Israelis and Palestinians aren’t antisemitic. But holding all Jews responsible for the actions of the Israeli government, denying or minimizing the suffering of Israelis on October 7, and calling for the elimination of Israel while demanding no other nation on earth disappear, are all antisemitic as is attacking random Jews, synagogues, or Jewish businesses around the world. In the meantime, I believe that we must do more to both stand up to and tackle antisemitism, especially with how it is spread online via social media.

THE NATIONAL PICTURE It’s frustrating to see the poor election results for Labour across Britain when there is so much the Government has achieved over the last two years. Here’s some of those things achieved in the last month: On 1st May the Renters’ Rights Act came into force, abolishing no fault evictions and giving more security to tenants, which will benefit 130,000 people in Hounslow & Richmond boroughs. In April, the Employment Rights Act extended rights to sick pay and parental leave in the biggest upgrade to workers’ rights in a generation. NHS waiting lists are the lowest for 3 years, A&E waiting times are the best for 5 years and ambulance response times are the fastest for half a decade. Recent figures show borrowing is at its lowest since the pandemic, with unemployment down and the economy growing faster than expected – showing that the Government had the right plan to strengthen our economy. Last month the Labour Government has announced: A youth employment and apprenticeship drive with Jobs Grants for employers taking on unemployed young people, widening the Jobs Guarantee and supporting apprentices taken on by small businesses. Since the General Election, Labour has increased the Living Wage, is rolling out free breakfast clubs for primary school children, given people £150 off energy bills and tended he 2-child benefit limit that so cruelly punished the children with more than one sibling and cut NHS waiting lists by 375,000

MY WESTMINSTER NEWS

Meeting with PM: Important for the Sikh community, I specifically asked the PM if the Government would formally apologise for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre - he confirmed he would consider this. Along with other London MPs, I raised the concerns of constituents about the retrospective nature the earned settlement immigration proposals (see below).

Immigration Changes: I have made no secret of my concerns about the Government’s retrospective changes to the visa rights of migrants seeking indefinite leave to remain. Many local people have emailed me about the stress it is causing them as they fear they cannot plan for a future living and working in the UK, having expected to be eligible to apply for Indefinite leave to remain (ILR) after five years. Many are here on visas; such as working for the NHS, in IT, as a care worker, others are academics and others have been accepted as refugees. The Government announcement has dashed their hopes for career progression, for their children’s higher education, and to no longer have to pay the exorbitant NHS charge and visa fees that they currently must deal with. I met immigration Minister Mike Tapp and a phalanx of civil servants to express my concerns and some of the experiences of constituents who have written to me.

SEND Roundtable: Changes to special education provision in England is overdue so I welcome the Government’s national consultation. I invited SEND co-ordinators of local schools to Parliament to hear their hopes and fears for the future. They felt that on the whole Hounslow Council is supporting SEND children better than some Councils. However, they were concerned that the future system would only work if there is enough funding and professionals with appropriate skills to ensure that mainstream schools could adequately support children who need additional support.

In the Chamber: Infected Blood Scandal: Minister for the Cabinet Office, Nick-Thomas Symonds announced that the Government have increased the compensation available with an extra £1 billion on top of the existing £11 billion. However, based on the experience of a family in my constituency, I asked him if the enhanced compensation scheme will benefit family members of those who died from HIV/AIDS without a spouse or children, and he confirmed he would look into the specific issue. Illegal Settlements: I challenged the Foreign Secretary to introduce a ban on trade with illegal settlements in the occupied west bank but didn’t get a clear answer.

LETTERS IVF treatment: In West London there is an NHS postcode lottery for those who need to have the chance to conceive via IVF. If you live in Hounslow, patients are entitled to fewer cycles than those who live in Hammersmith. Sadly, our newly merged Integrated Care Board told me they have no plans to address this anomaly for the sake of constituents who have contacted about this unfairness.

TRANSPORT COMMITTEE

Muslims in Rail: At our meeting senior members of MiR told me of the findings of their report on the experiences of Muslim staff working in our stations, on trains and getting to and from shifts on public transport. Muslim-appearing women in particular reported high levels of verbal and physical assault yet are not specially mentioned in statistics – these crimes fall in the gap between violence against women and racial crimes. Management pointed out to me that none of the “anti-harassment” posters showed a staff member in a hijab. They are also seeking drink bans on trains (and enforced on the tube), and images of Muslims included in posters warning against abusing rail staff

Yet again, I’ve written to the Roads Minister about the lack of any improvement on the delays on Driving Tests At Transport Questions urged the Government to have a plan to provide more Truck stops on our motorways and A-Roads

MY CONSTITUENCY NEWS

Ivybridge Asda: Asda have let me know that they will be closing their store on the Ivybridge Estate, and the lease will transfer to Lidl. However, the Lidl will not be open for several months while they refit the shop. I have written to Lidl directly to urge them to keep on the existing staff members and ensure that they can keep their jobs. I know it is important we have an affordable supermarket on this side of Isleworth and I am working with Councillors Salman Shaheen and Sue Sampson on this issue.

Cllr Tony Louki approached me for support after residents in Osterley contacted him concerned about the noise impact from the land on Macfarlane Lane that travellers had occupied. After a few weeks it appeared that the threshold for eviction had been reached and the police told me they were able to move them on.
