In the dead of the night, MAGA members of the Louisiana state legislature advanced a new gerrymandered map that eliminates one of the state’s majority-Black and Democratic districts.

At approximately 4:25 a.m. this morning, under the cover of darkness, Louisiana Republicans advanced Senate Bill 121 out of committee, where it will now head to the MAGA controlled Senate for a vote.

The new gerrymandered map in S.B. 121 is the brainchild of Republican state Senator Jay Morris—the man who introduced the legislation that erased the office won by exonerated Black man Calvin Duncan, and just last week, told the Black Executive Director of our party to “shut up, boy” during a committee hearing. 

Now, Morris has passed the first hurdle to completely eliminate the representation for hundreds of thousands of Black voters in Louisiana’s 6th Congressional District.

MAGA has officially pressed the nuclear button in the redistricting war. It’s a part of a nationwide effort to rip away the representation of Black voters in the Deep South and give the collapsing Trump administration a tilted playing field heading into the midterms.

But here’s the thing Senator Morris and Governor Landry are completely oblivious to: As they brazenly rush to eliminate Black representation and return our state to the era of Jim Crow, a blue wave is building in Louisiana.

Despite Governor Landry’s best attempts to confuse voters and suppress turnout in the upcoming May 16th elections, Democrats and Black voters are turning out at historic pace. Louisianans see the injustice, the prejudice, and the blatant power grab. And they’re revolting.

Democrats across the nation have rallied to our side during this unprecedented crisis, giving us the resources to fuel a massive voter information initiative to counter MAGA’s voter suppression and turnout voters to the polls.

But we won’t be letting up now—we’re doubling down. We’re building an unprecedented statewide effort to make sure MAGA regrets ever pressing that button come November. We just need your continued support to fuel the effort:
