PFLAG Connects

Dear John:

We have lots of ways to connect this week, through our pillars of Support, Education, and Advocacy; check them out below!

Supporting LGBTQ+ students with distance learning

Support

Supporting LGBTQ+ students for success

As kids begin to return to school--and for many of them, "return to school" means just another long day of Zoom meetings--it's critical that they feel safe and supported in every environment. For that reason, we are re-sharing this great resource that parents and educators can use in support of their LGBTQ+ students who are distance learning.

Also, be sure to get your free download of our safe schools publication, Cultivating Respect (English or Spanish), to prepare for when students can return (safely) to the schoolroom.

Education

Three steps to being a better voter education advocate

Just because you’re staying in, and times are tough, doesn’t mean doesn’t mean your voter education efforts should stop! So, stay safe and take these steps to engage:

  1. Learn: Go to pflag.org/pflagvotes2020 to learn more about deadlines, ID requirements, early voting, and when the polls are open in your state or read more about the federal legislation that could be at stake this November.
  2. Watch: Watch this brief video from HeadCount about voting with pride and check out the June PFLAG Academy On-Demand session PFLAG Votes 2020: Our Right and Our Responsibility.
  3. Share: Use emails, texts, and social media to share a sample ballot for your area with your friends and family. Try something like “Not sure what will be on the ballot this November? Organizations like Vote411.org and Ballot Ready can help!” Make sure to use #PFLAGVotes2020 in your posts!

Save the post office

Advocacy

ICYMI: Protect and save the U.S. Postal Service (USPS)

Last week, the USPS issued a letter saying recent changes to their operations are likely to mean ballot issues in at least 46 states. These changes are threatening the most fundamental part of our democracy: A free and fair election.

Check out our blog providing crucial education on the election and the Post Office, read it now - and be sure to bookmark it, as we will keep it updated! Then check in with American Postal Workers Union for helpful information and important actions to take in service of saving the post office, critical action in service of our upcoming election.
