Friends,
Last week, Marie Claire published a sweeping interview with my friend, Rep. LaMonica McIver, 11 of my Democratic colleagues, and me — discussing how we’re standing together as a sisterhood to support LaMonica while she takes on Donald Trump and his vindictive administration.
In case you haven’t been following LaMonica’s case, here’s a brief rundown:
LaMonica McIver is a wife, a mom, and a freshman Congresswoman representing New Jersey’s 10th District. Last year, she joined her New Jersey colleagues in conducting a routine congressional oversight visit of Delaney Hall, an ICE detention facility in her district, after reports of detainees being unable to reach their lawyers.
Their delegation was met with resistance and aggression from ICE agents, and afterwards, the Trump administration charged LaMonica with completely baseless criminal charges – for simply doing her job.
If convicted, she faces up to 17 years in prison.
Trump is willing to go to extreme lengths to punish his political adversaries and anyone else who speaks out against him, which is why it’s so incredibly important for all of us to stand firm with LaMonica. For her sake, and for the future of our democracy, too.
Trump’s attacks against LaMonica are unprecedented and dangerous. And because this is completely new territory, the Democratic Party had no playbook for this. There was no institutional fund for legal fees and no system of support in place to help a young Member of Congress fight these charges in court.
LaMonica has had to raise her own legal defense — which has already exceeded a million dollars in fees — dollar by dollar, while still showing up every single day to do the job that she was elected to do: working on behalf of the people of NJ-10.
My colleagues and I knew early on that LaMonica would need our support, and so our sisterhood was created. We showed up to the courtroom in Newark and sat behind her, because we knew silence from colleagues would send its own message — the wrong one. And on a human level, I wanted to make sure LaMonica didn’t feel alone in that scary moment.
Here's what I've come to understand clearly during LaMonica’s unbelievable journey: Trump wants to make us feel alone and isolated.
This administration is trying to make an example out of LaMonica — to make her feel like no one has her back, no one is coming to her rescue, and that the repercussions of simply doing her job are hers alone to bear.
But she is not alone. And building community is exactly how we fight back against this cruel and corrupt administration.
Oral arguments in LaMonica’s case are set for June 23rd – six weeks from today. That’s the last chance to get these charges dismissed before trial. She needs resources to fight, and to continue representing the people of New Jersey’s 10th District. So I'm asking you to join our community: will you donate to LaMonica’s campaign to help her fight back today?
