Reuters: France urges U.N. backing of West Africa force to tackle terrorism, trafficking

France on Tuesday proposed that the United Nations Security Council back a West African force to combat terrorism, drug and human trafficking by "eradicating the actions" of Islamist militants and organised crime groups in the Sahel region. The vast, arid zone has in recent years become a breeding ground for jihadist groups - some linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State - that European nations, particularly France, fear could threaten Europe if left unchecked.

In a show of solidarity, 32 government officials tasked with combating antisemitism and other forms of bigotry around the world released a joint statement today in Geneva, decrying the rise in attacks on Jews and Jewish institutions around the world in recent years and highlighting three core areas for governments to take action: increased security, prosecution of perpetrators and curbing hate speech on social media.

Afghanistan International: Taliban-Pakistan Border Clashes Killed 372 Civilians in 3 Months, Says UN

United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said 372 civilians were killed and 397 injured in border clashes between the Taliban and Pakistan between January and March 2026. In a report released on Tuesday, UNAMA said it had documented 95 incidents during the first three months of the year, attributing 94 per cent of them to Pakistan and one incident to the Taliban administration.

The Delhi Police Special Cell arrested Rizwan Ali, a wanted terrorist with alleged ISIS connections, on August 8, just days before the Independence Day celebrations in the national capital. The arrest took place around 11 p.m. near Ganga Baksh Marg, Delhi, following a tip-off. Authorities recovered a .30 bore pistol, three live cartridges, and two mobile phones from his possession. Dawn: CTD arrests outlaw linked to Al-Qaeda in Pakpattanv

Acting on a tip-off, the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) arrested an outlaw affiliated with a banned outfit from Jamia Anwar-i-Farid, Nath Pul, Pakpattan, on Sunday night. Reports said Muhammad Mahfooz, a resident of Saboo Kay, Tibbi Lal Baig, Tehsil Arifwala, was distributing Al-Qaeda publications and banned material to shops and residents in the surrounding village. When approached, the suspect attempted to flee but was apprehended by the CTD team led by Muhammad Anees, Saadullah and Gulzar Mahmood.

Reuters: U.S. launches new air strike on Somalia

U.S. forces hunting al Qaeda suspects launched a fresh air strike on southern Somalia on Wednesday, a Somali government source said. "As we speak now, the area is being bombarded by the American air force," he told Reuters, giving no further details.

 

Australia

Iran International: Australia sanctions Iranian officials, entities over crackdown and destabilizing activity

Australia sanctioned seven Iranian individuals and four entities on Tuesday over what it called the Islamic Republic’s crackdown on protesters and women and its destabilizing activity through missile and shadow-banking networks. The Australian foreign ministry said the measures targeted senior officials and entities involved in violence against women and children, mass arrests, torture, forced confessions, internet restrictions and the wrongful detention of foreign nationals.

Jewish musicians have told a royal commission hearing that their views on Zionism made them the targets of vilification and boycotting. The royal commission on antisemitism and social cohesion heard from Deborah Conway and Joshua Moshe on Monday: both were members of a WhatsApp group for Jewish creatives and academics, the contents of which was leaked by the media and some of the members’ personal information made public.
