The United States Postal Service is under attack, John.
And it's hitting us all, because the mail is a public good that all of us rely on.
Maybe you've noticed the slowdown in mail service yourself. Maybe you are waiting right now for an important delivery or prescription to arrive. Maybe you've seen local news reports about deactivated machines or disappearing mailboxes.
And you've probably read about Louis DeJoy, the Trump meagadonor who he put in charge as Postmaster General just a few weeks ago and whose directives are causing all of this damage just weeks before the election.
The United States Postal Service has been under attack by Republicans for decades. They hate it because people like you and me rely on it every day as a public good. They hate it because it's provided jobs that have been a ladder into the middle class for many people of color. And they want to dismantle it so that their corrupt corporate megadonors can profit — the same way they want to privatize things like public education, health care, and social security.
Now, their years-long effort to destroy the postal service is dovetailing with Trump's corrupt push to undermine vote-by-mail and preemptively discredit the results of an election he knows he's losing.
This feeling might be scary, but it is a familiar one to many.
It's the same feeling that has pervaded communities of color where Republicans have cheated, pushing modern day poll taxes, removing polling stations, purging voter rolls, and using intimidation and force to try and stop us from voting for generations.
Here's the thing: Trump knows he can't win a fair election. That's why he's trying to sow doubt and chaos. But he's actually operating from a position of immense weakness.
The masses are against him on this, and we the people have the power.
We can fight back, and here's how:
1. Speaker Pelosi is calling the House back from recess this week to hold hearings and to vote on legislation that would prohibit the USPS from implementing any changes to their operations standards until January 1st or the pandemic has ended. Call your member of Congress today at (202) 224-3121 and urge them to immediately pass the Delivering for America Act and force Louis DeJoy to testify at a Congressional hearing.
2. The Postmaster General is hired and fired by the USPS Board of Governors, which currently consists of six corporate Trump appointees. They need to feel the heat. Use our tool here to send a personal email to the members of the USPS Board of Governors demanding that they stop the mail slowdown and urge them to fire Louis DeJoy immediately.
3. This weekend, protesters showed up outside the home of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy. Next weekend, we're showing up everywhere. If you're able, join us on Saturday, August 22 for "#SaveThePostOffice Saturday" at local post offices across the country to save the post office from Trump and demand that Louis DeJoy immediately resign.
4. One of the biggest ways we can make sure Trump can't mess with the election results is to make sure he loses and loses BIG. Make your plan now to vote early either in person or by mail. If you plan to vote by mail, and you need to request a ballot, request your ballot as soon as possible and return it as soon as possible.
5. As COVID continues to spread, we are also seeing a record decrease in poll workers everywhere which could cause closed polling places and longer delays. You can help make sure we have a safe, fair, efficient election for all voters, and potentially get paid to do it. If you're not at-risk, learn more about how you can sign up to be a poll worker on Election Day.
6. We know no matter what that Trump's plan is to sow chaos after Election Day because he's telling us that plan out loud over and over. Sign up here to pledge to take action after the election to protect the results for as long as it takes until Trump leaves the White House.
There are 78 days until Election Day. Let's make sure we don't waste any of them.
In solidarity,
Nelini Stamp
