Dear John,

I joined our El Paso Powered by People team on the UTEP campus last week
and had a chance to meet Vanessa.

When I greeted her in English, she responded in Spanish and so I continued
the conversation in her preferred language.

Like a lot of students in border campuses (from the Rio Grande Valley, up
through Laredo, Eagle Pass, Del Rio and all the way to El Paso), Vanessa
speaks both English and Spanish.

But when it comes to personal issues she, like many of her fellow
students, prefers to speak in her native language.

That’s why so many of our volunteers speak both English and Spanish,
especially in border communities like El Paso.

It’s our chance to listen to these students and make a real, personal
connection with them. It’s critical to our work to register and work with
them to ensure they vote in the upcoming midterm elections.

That’s how we were able to register Vanessa and agree with her that we’d
stay in touch through the election to answer any questions she has about
voting and to encourage her to cast a ballot for the first time in her
life.
