City Council leisure centres have best health and safety standards in the country

At a time when health and safety is more important than ever, it is very reassuring to hear the news that the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has once again classed our Sport and Leisure team, which manages the City Councils leisure centres, as Gold standard. This year the team has really excelled and has also been declared Overall Winner in the leisure sector award. The awards recognise the hard work and dedication needed to ensure that customers have a safe and enjoyable experience every time they visit.

All eight leisure centres and seven pools are now open and the teams there are working hard on reinstating all activities and classes. Libraries

You may have seen the news that as the new Central Library continues to progress at pace as part of the new Broadmarsh Car Park, Bus Station and retail development, a decision has been made to not re-open the Nottingham Central Library at its current location on Angel Row. Rather than offering a limited service in a complex building with COVID-19 restrictions in place, I would encourage everyone to take advantage of the fact that all local libraries are now open again with more people using their neighbourhood libraries during these strange times.

Although there will understandably be disappointment that the Angel Row site will not reopen, it does enable the City Council to speed up the sale of the Angel Row site and for the fit-out of the new Central Library to be completed at a faster rate than previously anticipated. The new Central Library is coming along very well, and the changes to the roads in the Broadmarsh area mean our teams can now focus on creating a fantastic new public realm outside the new library on Carrington Street and the now closed Collin Street.

Broadmarsh road changes

As I mentioned above, last week we changed the way roads work in the Broadmarsh area, with Collin Street and Canal Street between Middle Hill and Greyfriar Gate closing to traffic and directional changes on Greyfriar Gate and Middle Hill. These are the biggest changes drivers have seen in around 15 years and I would like to thank everyone who has driven through the area for adapting to the changes and following the new routes.

These changes are essential for us as they allow for the construction of a brilliant new public realm which will be situated along Collin Street, Canal Street and Sussex Street and near the tram bridge. This will create a fantastic new entrance for visitors to Nottingham from the train and bus stations and for those living and working in the area, providing better spaces to relax, reside and socialise in a greener area of the city centre.

Annual Canvass

To ensure that the Electoral Register is complete and accurate the councils Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) must carry out an annual canvass of all households each year. The law requires that every household must be contacted by the ERO to request information about who is resident at the address to ensure that all eligible electors are registered to vote.

Due to a change in law this is the first year that the ERO can make the initial contact digitally where we have those contact details for households. This will make the annual canvass simpler for citizens and reduce the administration involved. Households will be contacted by either:


* Email / text - If we have your email address or phone number, we will have contacted you asking to confirm your household details online instead of posting you a form. The email will come from *[email protected].*
THIS IS NOT SPAM. Please check your inbox.
* Paper form - If we don't have your email address or phone number or you don't respond to our initial contact, you will have received a paper form through the post.

If the form asks you to respond then it is important to do so to ensure that you can have your say at future elections. Where possible, please try to respond online or alternatively, you can post the form back to us.
