Dear John,

I’m asking you to help, John, because if we get 10,000 signatures on our Parliamentary petition, the Government is obliged to respond.
A couple of weeks ago I asked you to sign two Parliamentary petitions to help tackle two longstanding issues: antisemitism on social media and antisemitism by those who have received honours from the Queen.

Parliamentary petitions help us to force issues to the Government’s attention because if we get just 10,000 signatures the Government is forced to respond, and if we get 100,000 signatures we may secure a debate in the House of Commons.

There are two petitions we would like you to sign if you are a British citizen or UK resident. Parliament will not publish your name.

The first petition calls for a new law to urgently introduce a requirement for technology companies to remove racist incitement within set timeframes, a duty of care for social networks with personal liability for executives, and tighter requirements to provide evidence to police under warrant. This would bring Britain into alignment with other countries leading the fight against online hatred. At the moment, these measures might not be introduced until 2024, or not at all.

Impunity for racist incitement on social media must end.

The second petition calls for the Honours Forfeiture Committee to automatically revoke honours that have been awarded to people who later engage in racism, and to hold any deliberations in public, like a tribunal.

When racists abuse their honours to spread hatred, their honours must be stripped from them.
