I’m writing with an update on the fight to stop Pebble Mine. Last month, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers rushed its Final Environmental Impact Statement for the Pebble Mine project in Bristol Bay, Alaska. This inadequate EIS failed to account for the dangerous waste that will be produced if built -- and the project is continuing to surge forward. But we have a plan to stop it. Help stop Pebble Mine with a $10 donation now!
If built, Pebble Mine will irreparably damage Bristol Bay’s environment and devastate local Indigenous communities -- like mine -- that have relied on this area for thousands of years. It will fill the waters with toxins like arsenic and lead. It could also wipe out one of the last remaining healthy wild salmon populations in the world.
Since the USACE refused to act, it is time to put pressure on the U.S. EPA to veto the environmental damage that would directly impact local Indigenous communities. Friends of the Earth just delivered over 30,000 signatures to the EPA to veto the project, and we aren’t stopping there.

Throughout the global pandemic, corporate polluters continue to rake in rollbacks and profits. Meanwhile, voices of Alaskans and Americans throughout the country in opposition of Pebble Mine continue to be silenced -- including Bristol Bay residents.
It is inexcusable to endanger Bristol Bay’s pristine ecosystem or the health of its communities with the toxic Pebble Mine. The mine could generate more than 10 billion tons of dangerous waste, wipe out 90 miles of salmon streams, and pollute more than 5,000 acres of wetlands, ponds, and lakes.
Pebble Mine would also decimate the local salmon population -- catastrophically impacting local communities and the last great wild sockeye salmon fishery in the world.
Moving forward with this project in the face of these risks would be inexcusable, so we must get loud enough to force the EPA to veto this project. We need you to stand up for Bristol Bay’s cultural history, its people, and the surrounding ecosystems.

Local Bristol Bay communities are especially vulnerable to the COVID-19 pandemic spreading across the country. They have had to scramble to focus on pandemic response, right when it was time to review the final plans for Pebble Mine. While the communities have been working to protect themselves from the pandemic, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the mining company have used this moment to ram their project through -- despite the public health emergency and pleas from local communities.
We know this play: They are banking on the confusion and vulnerability of these communities to be just the distraction they need to force this catastrophic project through. If it isn’t stopped, Pebble Mine will be just another handout to the polluting extraction industry. To the mining company, our land, our people, and our way of life are just obstacles in the way of their toxic, greedy payday.
We refuse to allow Bristol Bay’s natural beauty to be sacrificed. Bristol Bay’s communities and wildlife have been there for thousands of years, and we won’t let them destroy my home. They think they can get away with this while the world’s attention is on the pandemic and other issues. But we are paying attention, and we know you’re paying attention with us! Together, we will keep fighting back. We have an opportunity now to pressure the EPA to do its job right and protect Bristol Bay’s pristine environment and communities. But we can’t do it alone.
