Hi John,
I’m Russella, When We All Vote’s new Managing Director of Partnerships and Organizing. As a mother, organizer, and someone deeply rooted in community, I’m honored to do this work alongside this team — and more importantly, you.
One of the sentiments I often share about my own journey into motherhood is that I did not know if she would find me, but I am so glad she did. Mothering my son has been one of the most sacred and sacrificial experiences of my life. And since becoming a mother, I often return to a line from Song of Solomon by one of my favorite authors, Toni Morrison:
"She needed what most colored girls needed: a chorus of mamas, grandmamas, aunts, cousins, sisters, neighbors, Sunday school teachers, best girlfriends, and what all to give her the strength life demanded of her — and the humor with which to live it."
Toni was talking about the necessary communion among mothers and the collective echoes needed to support the raising of our children. What motherhood shows us is simple: the work of caring, protecting, and building a future is never done in isolation — and neither is the fight for our voting rights.
Our work at When We All Vote is part of something bigger, an effort to build a democracy that reflects all of us. It’s rooted in a simple belief: when WE all vote, our collective power is stronger than those in power. And the recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court gutting the Voting Rights Act [[link removed]] is a clear reminder of why this work matters.
Ensuring all Americans — especially young Black and Brown voters — can make their voices heard is no small mission. Here are two easy ways you can take action:
🪻Check your voter registration status and ask the young people in your life to check theirs, too. >>> [[link removed]]
🪻Share this survey with them and encourage them to speak up on the issues that matter most to them. >>> [[link removed]]
When I entered motherhood, it never occurred to me that I would have to take up the same fight to protect my son’s voting rights as my grandmothers did for me. But I have, and this fight cannot be won without each other, and hopefully, in Toni’s words, “the humor with which to live it."
With Love ♥️,
Russella
