John,
America, are you seeing the pattern in everything happening in Louisiana right now?
A Black man was elected Criminal Clerk of Court in New Orleans with 68% of the vote, after promising to bring integrity and transparency to the courts.
Republicans then moved to eliminate his seat.
Calvin just so happens to be Black.
The Supreme Court guts the Voting Rights Act. And Louisiana’s governor canceled the election by executive order so the legislature could redraw the maps and eliminate Cleo Fields’ and Troy Carter's seats.
They both just so happen to be Black.
There is a pattern here, and the rest of the country had better recognize that what is happening in Louisiana is a test run for what the Grand Old Party wants to do across the nation.
Republicans here insist this is about fairness, constitutional process, and certainly not racist voter suppression. We know better.
I was born in the late sixties, and I do not have to be a historian to tell you this is the same segregationist tactics this country has seen since Reconstruction and beyond.
I would love for someone to explain how this is not about forcing so-called “minorities” to remain subject to the will of a self-proclaimed “majority.”
Republicans here are eliminating seats and canceling elections to rig the game against the people.
This November, we’re going to find out whether the real majority in this country is made up of people who are tired of Jim Crow-style gerrymandering and voter suppression.
People are going to vote in May and beyond, and while the GOP is celebrating gerrymandering today, they will soon find themselves not only on the wrong side of history but outside the people’s house by 2027. I need your urgent support so I can tell these GOP segregationists that America has had enough of their Jim Crow policies.
