👋 Hi John! Happy Saturday.
In the Watchdog Newsletter, we share what you need to know to hold power accountable from the nonpartisan source you can trust. This watchdog doesn’t give in to pressure from presidents.
This week’s Common Cause newsletter is just a 7 minute read at 825 words.
📍 Florida Becomes the First Battleground After Callais
The Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais changed the fight for fair maps, and Common Cause is ready to stop anti-voter politicians from using it to silence you.
The same day the decision came down, Common Cause Florida was at the state legislature fighting Governor Ron DeSantis’ latest attempt to push through unfair maps.
These new maps violate Florida’s constitutional ban on partisan gerrymandering that voters approved in 2010. They’re designed to tilt power further in Republicans’ favor, and they threaten Black and brown representation in communities across North and Central Florida.
So, when DeSantis signed it into law, Common Cause sued to block Florida’s new congressional map from taking effect. Even after last week’s Supreme Court ruling weakened federal protections against racial gerrymandering, Florida voters still have state-level protections they can count on because voters wrote anti-gerrymandering rules directly into the state constitution.
Florida is now the first major test of what redistricting looks like after Callais. Politicians may think they have a green light to silence voters. We’re here to remind them: state-level protections still count, voters voices still matter, and Common Cause is still in the fight.
💰 No Blank Check for Trump’s IRS Case
President Trump is suing the IRS for $10 billion — but that agency operates under the president’s authority, meaning Trump is suing the government he’s in charge of for a massive taxpayer-funded payout.
We can’t ignore this corruption. The court has a responsibility to protect the public interest and ensure this case is handled fairly. That’s why Common Cause worked with partners, and former IRS and DOJ officials, in urging the court to protect fairness, the rule of law, and the public interest in this case.
Last week, we got an important win: the judge in the case appointed three independent parties to help advise. That means the court will have outside experts helping ensure this case isn’t treated like business as usual.
No president should be able to use public office, public agencies, or taxpayer dollars for personal financial gain. Common Cause will keep fighting to make sure government serves the people — not the personal interests of those in power.
✈️ People Power Blocks New ICE Funding
After 75 days, the Department of Homeland Security is no longer shut down, and the federal government agreed to fund essential agencies like TSA without handing more money to ICE or Border Patrol.
That’s another massive win against ICE and the Trump administration’s attacks on the American people.
For months, Common Cause has been loud and clear: not another penny for ICE without serious reforms, accountability, and new leadership. We already won by firing Kristi Noem. And thanks to your action, Democrats have held the line and refused to pass a deal that didn’t reflect the will of the people.
Because of public pressure, congressional outreach, and members like you speaking out, Congress moved forward with a funding measure that pays TSA workers and keeps critical services running without fueling further violence by ICE and Border Patrol.
Our fight isn’t over. We still need stronger oversight, real reforms, and accountability. But this week, we proved people power gets results.
