Friend, Democrats’ chances of retaking the House this year took a huge hit this week.
States across the South are eliminating majority-Black districts and gerrymandering them into Republican strongholds after SCOTUS decided to gut the Voting Rights Act.
Virginia’s attempt to level the playing field was struck down by the state Supreme Court despite voters approving the new maps, taking five potential new Democratic seats off the table — five seats that were meant to balance out the extreme Republican power grabs in states like Texas.
Trump and Republicans are taking massive swings at our democracy, rigging the system to cement MAGA-rule, but I am imploring you to have hope. It may sound corny, but take it from me.
I spent my young life fleeing civil war, living in a refugee camp, and navigating my immigration to America. I didn’t have the luxury of abandoning hope. At times, hope was the only thing that pushed me through. It was what drove me to keep getting back up, to keep moving forward and doing anything I could to change my situation.
Yes, we face an uphill battle. But nothing is impossible. If we can build a massive grassroots movement, the kind we’ve seen in the Civil Rights Movement, the Women’s Rights Movement, and many other fights for justice in our history, we can win.
But it’s going to take a big investment from all of us; time, energy, resources, and people-power. We need to organize every day, break the GOP’s rigged political system, and overcome authoritarianism through the sheer will of democracy.
It’s a tough task, but I know we can do it together.
