When Jamie was growing up in Orangeburg, SC, the son of a single teenage mother, he was indelibly shaped by their economic hardship. And while he went on to graduate from Yale, he's never forgotten what it was like to have the lights turned off, to have to search for spare change to put gas in the family car, or eat cereal with water because his family couldn't afford milk.
