John--
At the August 12th Freeholder meeting I was surprised to learn that after the floor was closed for public comment, a resolution to oppose Mail in Ballots was presented and passed. The topic of voters rights and the concern for voter disenfranchisement should have been on the agenda and open to comments from the public.
I realize there are many obstacles for our community regarding vote by mail to which I ask what did we learn from the July Primary and how are we solving those issues? According to the official count, the primary showed an increase in voter participation, which begs the question why are the freeholders contending that vote by mail prohibits voting?
As public officials, it is up to us to provide individuals with the opportunity to exercise their right to vote. We should be providing more alternatives for safe voting. For example, provide a drop box for ballots in each municipality and publicly provide information on how to successfully vote by mail.
I for one am thankful to the state, county clerk, and board of elections for the work they did in the Primary and I am confident that they will continue to provide accessibility for all voters. Additionally, many of our wonderful poll workers are over the age of 60 and part of a vulnerable population. It has historically been difficult to hire poll workers. Creating new locations would only exacerbate the situation. Not to mention the cost of operating, finding and compensating poll workers. The health and well-being of the community should drive this decision, not party politics. As we are in the midst of the pandemic, and grappling with what the fall will look like I believe that voting by mail is the safest option for all residents. I hope you all join me in voting by mail this November.
