On Wed, April 29th, SCOTUS struck down the foundation of the VRA, the legislation that ended Jim Crow, making it permissible to create new segregated districts denying black voters the opportunity for equal representation. 

Then on Thurs, April 30th, everything changed. MAGA crossed a rubicon and did something that had never before seen in American political history: 

They declared a “state of emergency”, suspended our upcoming House elections, and began the process of erasing our two black districts.

With GOP super majorities in our State House, a conservative state supreme court, and a MAGA Governor, all seemed lost. As one of the least funded parties in the nation our options were extremely limited. But then something unexpected happened. Hundreds of thousands of Democrats from across the nation began to join our ranks:

On April 30th we all became Louisiana Democrats. Whether you were in Boulder, CO, or New Philadelphia, Ohio, our plight became a rallying cry for Democrats everywhere. 

In the days that followed we raised more than our party had raised in entire election cycles. 

Now we are headed into this fight with real firepower. We will be able launch an unprecedented counter-disinformation campaign (MAGA has convinced millions of Louisanans that the entire election has been canceled when in reality it is only the House races). And now we’ll be able to fight MAGA in court with some of the best political counsel money can buy. 

But all of this only staunches the bleeding. The real fight ahead will be the fight to defend incumbent Congressman Cleo Fields (D-LA) the Democrat whose black majority district is in the bullseye of MAGA’s Jim Crow redistricting scheme, and Congressman Troy Carter (D-LA) whose district could be next. 

We have to spend the next four months ensuring that these Congressman can hold out against the overwhelming odds they now likely face. ​​And If they don't survive, MAGA’s gerrymandering scheme gets them two seats closer to weathering the midterms that should’ve been their undoing.
