The U.S. census is more than just another form to fill out. It’s a road map for every big decision the federal government makes that touches our everyday lives.

Every ten years, the census counts how many people there are in each neighborhood, city, and state in the country. Using those numbers, the federal government then assigns more than $1.5 trillion in funding for critical resources like food assistance, maternal health care, LGBTQ youth programs, and affordable housing. 

The census also has a hand in determining how many books and computers schools can afford, whether seniors in our neighborhoods can afford heating in the winter, if there are bus routes where we need them, and whether communities have fair political representation. 

Filling out the census and getting counted is about ensuring your community’s needs are met. So it’s little wonder why Trump and his administration are trying to rig the census right now. 

Trump has decided to end the 2020 census count four weeks early, making it virtually impossible to accurately count our nation’s hardest-to-reach residents. Because of his new deadline, nearly four out of every 10 households risk not being counted, which comes out to nearly 60 million households. Without an accurate count, vital resources won’t get to those who need them most and would disproportionately impact Black and brown Americans.
