New Primate Licensing Laws in the UK

On 6th April, new licensing regulations governing the keeping of primates as ‘pets’ in England officially came into force, following years of campaigning by Freedom for Animals alongside a coalition of animal protection organisations, experts and advocates who have long raised serious concerns about the welfare of primates kept in private homes.

Although this marks an important acknowledgment by the government that primates are unsuitable as ‘pets’, and the legislation sets out minimum standards for housing, care and record-keeping, our position remains clear: this is not a sufficient solution to protect these animals from exploitation and harm, and crucially, still permits primates to be kept in private ownership.

Simply, no matter how detailed the standards are, a domestic environment can never meet the complex needs of a wild animal.

National Trust Reindeer events

The National Trust’s Dunster Castle site has confirmed to us that they will no longer use reindeer in their events! As this was the only site still using reindeer in 2025, we are hopeful that this will be written into the organisation’s policy.

An update on the Sea Life penguins

We’re very saddened to share that Ratchet, one of the Gentoo penguins at Sea Life London, has passed away aged 31 years. He was one of the 15 penguins at the heart of our ‘Free the Fifteen’ campaign.

Ratchet was a wild animal - an individual whose life should not have been defined by confinement. His tragic story is a reminder of why this campaign matters so deeply.

14 penguins remain. His family. We are continuing to work, alongside other organisations and in discussions with Merlin entertainments, to secure a better future for them - one that respects their nature and their rights.

Please help us keep the pressure on by signing the petition. ([link removed])

For Ratchet - and for the others still there - we keep going. Thank you for standing with us.

Bring an end to hunting!

Our friends at the Hunt Saboteurs Association have asked us to share the link to the government’s Consultation on Proposals to Prohibit Trail Hunting in England and Wales ([link removed]). The consultation is open until 18th June.

The HSA have provided suggested responses ([link removed]), but it is important that all submissions are unique to the individual, as ‘cut and paste’ entries will be put into a single submission.

Now is the time to bring hunting to an end - make sure your voice is heard!
