Throughout May, in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re highlighting the power of community and the people within it.

Today, we want to talk about a reality that does not often receive enough attention: People with neurodivergent conditions, including [autism]([link removed]) and ADHD, experience significantly higher risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

Research shows that:

- Autistic individuals have rates of death by suicide that are nearly three times higher than those of the general population

- Approximately one in three autistic individuals report suicidal ideation, and between 15-25% report attempts or other suicidal behaviors

- Autistic youth are seven to eight times more likely to experience suicidal thoughts and behaviors than non-autistic youth

These risks do not represent individual weakness. They reflect gaps in understanding and in systems not built with care for neurodivergent minds.

That is why AFSP’s work matters. Through research, education, advocacy, and community-based support, we are working to ensure suicide prevention reaches all people, including those whose brains are wired differently.

With gratitude and hope,
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
