Dear friend,
At J Street, we’re committed to fighting tooth and nail for democracy – both in Israel and here at home. That commitment means showing up when the foundations of our system are under threat.
Last week, the Supreme Court handed down a decision that will reshape American democracy, weakening key provisions of the Voting Rights Act and opening the door for states to redraw electoral maps in ways that diminish the political power of Black voters and other minority communities.
Just days later, justices allowed that ruling to take effect immediately, accelerating changes that could impact elections as soon as this year.
The Voting Rights Act was born from struggle and grounded in the belief that every person deserves an equal voice. It was carried forward by Black civil rights leaders – with steadfast support from Jewish activists – marching, organizing and risking everything together. That’s the legacy we inherit, and it’s a legacy we cannot betray.

For J Street, this moment feels especially urgent. Jewish Americans have long been part of the fight for civil and voting rights in this country. That legacy reflects a core truth: Our safety and our future are bound up with the rights of others.
This moment demands moral clarity. We are calling on all of our Jewish communal leaders and institutions to speak out clearly and publicly in defense of voting rights, equal representation and a multiracial democracy.

After you sign, you’ll receive a follow-up email with ways to directly support organizations on the ground, many led by Black and local community leaders, who are fighting to protect voting access and defend democratic participation.
As Rabbi Jonah Pesner, director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, reminded us in The Forward:
“The Supreme Court decision is [...] a setback for American democracy, and for those of us who understand that democracy is not just a system of government but a moral commitment.”
We cannot allow hard-won civil rights protections to be dismantled piece by piece. We cannot accept a future where electoral maps are drawn to silence communities that most need to be heard.
And we cannot allow our own community’s historic commitment to justice to fade into the past.
Onwards,
Hannah Morris
Vice President of Government Affairs, J Street

J Street is the political home for pro-Israel, pro-peace, pro-democracy
Americans who want Israel to be secure, democratic and the national home of the
Jewish people. Working in American politics and the Jewish community, we
advocate policies that advance shared US and Israeli interests as well as Jewish
and democratic values, leading to a 23-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian
