Today GLAAD released the sixth annual Social Media Safety Index (SMSI) — a powerful tool in the fight against anti-LGBTQ hate, harassment, and disinformation online. This one-of-a-kind report analyzes public-facing policies related to LGBTQ user safety, privacy, and expression across six major social media platforms: TikTok, YouTube, X, and Meta’s Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.

Highlights from this year’s report include:

With the exception of TikTok, 2026 platform scores dropped across the board and have hit historic lows.

Both Meta and YouTube continue to maintain their 2025 anti-LGBTQ policy changes, which have made their platforms more toxic and harmful for LGBTQ users, notably transgender and gender non-conforming people. Both companies have also retreated from best practices in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).

X continues to rank last among all platforms evaluated, declining to a 29 (out of 100) score.

In addition to a thorough explanation of our findings, GLAAD also offers recommendations for these platforms to be made safer and more inclusive spaces for LGBTQ people.
