Republicans in the Senate aren’t interested in representing the people -- they think who deserves representation is a partisan question

Indivisibles,

A few days ago, Martha McSally (R-AZ) complained about the possibility of statehood for D.C. -- saying that with two new senators from D.C., “We'd never get the Senate back again. And look, this is just the implications of this seat, the implications of this vote.”

Republicans just gave the game away: they’d rather rig the Senate and stay in power in perpetuity by denying equal representation in Congress to the 700,000 people who live in the District of Columbia -- the majority of whom are people of color. We know that the real “implications” of D.C. statehood (not to mention self-determination for Puerto Rico) for Republicans is that it will grant political power to historically marginalized people. Enfranchising people isn’t partisan. It’s just the right thing to do. Period.

But Republicans in the Senate aren’t interested in representing the people. Whether their own constituents or marginalized communities across the country, GOP senators have become experts at ignoring the people in favor of corporate interests and the white elite. That’s why we started the Payback Project at the beginning of this year: to kick out some of the worst offenders and elect senators who are ready to fight for the people.

Since then we’ve made huge strides, with polls in states like Arizona, Maine, and even South Carolina showing we have a real shot at winning seats that have been red for years. We’re within striking distance, but we can’t give up yet -- and that’s why we’re kicking into high gear with millions of voter contacts, thousands of events, and everything else we can do to win in November.

That’s where we need your help. All in, we’re planning to spend over $2.5 million before the end of the year on our Payback plans -- and grassroots donations (that’s people like you, making average gifts of less than $25) are our single biggest source of funding. That means your support is crucial to winning big this year. Can you make a $10 gift to support the Payback Project, take back the Senate, and fund our work this year?

We have just a few short months left to work toward winning, and we have to give it everything we’ve got. You’re a huge part of what makes our movement a success, and we’re glad you’re in it with us.

In solidarity,
Indivisible Team
