Hey John,
Can you imagine having the audacity - the pure nerve - to impersonate President Barack Obama and fake his endorsement? We sure can't. But as it turns out, fake robocalls were sent to voters claiming that President Obama had endorsed anti-LGBTQ former state Senator Daphne Campbell, who is running against our candidate Shevrin Jones.
Of course, President Obama never endorsed Campbell and his team issued a swift correction. But the damage is done.
While it remains a MYSTERY (though we have some guesses!) as to who organized the fake robocall, here's what you should know about Daphne Campbell - and why President Obama would never endorse her. She voted against same-sex adoption and co-sponsored a so-called “bathroom bill” targeting trans people while a member of the Florida state House. Defending her votes, she said, “The gay people have their rights. I have my rights.”
Floridians will vote next week - and they'll choose between Campbell and Spotlight candidate Shevrin Jones. Shevrin is running to make LGBTQ history as the first openly LGBTQ state senator - and our state legislative candidates must win if we're going to flip the Florida house!
Ms. Campbell isn't the only homophobe we're running against this cycle. From Florida to Hawaii, our candidates are working hard to win against smear tactics like this. Chip in today to help them win!
And earlier this week, Shevrin was the direct target of a homophobic attack! Voters in his district were sent text messages saying: “the Miami Herald reported that Shevrin Jones was discriminated against for recent homosexual contact.” The text included a link to a web page unaffiliated with Jones’ campaign and copied an old Miami Herald article reporting on Jones being denied the opportunity to donate blood because he is gay.
The mysterious forces behind these messages must know they can't beat Shevrin on the issues, so they're resorting to dirty tricks, fake stories and even faker endorsements to beat him. Will you make a rush donation to support Shevrin and all our candidates running against bigots today?
Maybe it's true that desperate times call for desperate measures. And we know for a fact that this is just the beginning. These won't be the only fake news pieces that attack our candidates this cycle. Many of our amazing candidates are running against bigots - and they need your support. Chip in today to defend them from the never-ending nefarious nonsense!
