Friend,
Today marks an historic turning point in how far we’ve come to end the war on marijuana and make racial justice fundamental to the future of legalization.
Tune in at 10AM ET to watch Congress hold its first ever hearing on the overhaul of federal marijuana laws, Marijuana Laws in America: Racial Justice and the Need for Reform. [link removed]
This hearing in the House Judiciary Committee is a bold step forward in the fight to advance marijuana justice nationwide. Not only have we forced Congress to start taking reform seriously, we’ve shifted the conversation to why legalization must also repair the harms of prohibition.
The dramatic and necessary evolution on this issue is thanks to your support, and our momentum is growing. Just yesterday, we joined with our allies to launch the new Marijuana Justice Coalition [link removed] and released a set of principles for federal marijuana reform [link removed] with emphasis on racial justice.
Marijuana prohibition and the larger war on drugs are hurting all of us. But low-income people and communities of color have been disproportionately harmed with higher rates of arrest and incarceration.
The only way to right the wrongs of prohibition is to ensure legalization happens with a racial justice lens and gives back to the communities most devastated by the drug war.
In just the last two years, DPA has led the way on changing this conversation in the states and nationally. The passage of Prop. 64 in California, our current campaigns in New York and New Mexico, and the groundbreaking Marijuana Justice Act are all focused on ensuring that legalization is fair, equitable and repairs past harms.
Today’s historic hearing in Congress [link removed] is another promising step in the right direction. We’re excited to work with you to keep building momentum for marijuana legalization – and justice – across the country.
Sincerely,
Queen Adesuyi
