John,  Late on the night of Wednesday, April 29th, word began circulating that MAGA was set to declare a state of emergency to cancel Louisiana’s May 16th election. In the days that followed, the distinction was made that the GOP was only canceling Congressional elections and not the other elections, including ours, set to take place on May 16th. However, after hundreds of conversations between voters and our field team this weekend, it’s clear that the damage has been done. Voters are throwing away their absentee ballots and canceling plans to vote under the false assumption that the election has been canceled. Quick history lesson: The KKK Act of 1871, bans the underhanded tactics used by the Ku Klux Klan to disenfranchise black voters during the Reconstruction era, and to this day remains a foundational tenet of American civil rights law. One of the segregationists' favored methods of ensuring newly emancipated black voters did not exercise their right to vote was by placing ads in local newspapers advertising erroneous dates for upcoming elections or false claims that elections had been postponed or canceled. That is exactly what is happening in Louisiana right now. Within a week, MAGA has reintroduced Jim Crow-style gerrymandering to disenfranchise black voters, and now they are using old-school tactics to trick black/Democratic voters into not voting in a critical election. My message to MAGA is this: As a descendant of sharecroppers, I saw what you did to my grandpa, and we aren’t going back. This is why our campaign is joining up with the other Louisiana Democratic campaigns targeted by the GOP’s assault on voters and is preparing to do what my ancestors did and challenge these segregationists in court. This is money we should be spending on GOTV efforts; however, we cannot allow MAGA to get away with this. This is a dry run for canceling the midterms, and we either stop them here or canceling elections becomes the norm. We need a torrent of support from across the nation to make up for the massive hole that has been blown in our budget by this unfolding legal effort.
