For as long as I’ve been involved in politics, Louisiana has been at the cutting edge of the far-right's cruelest and most depraved policies. Look at what we’ve faced in just the first 5 months of 2026:
We saw the passage of a new law that would give the homeless an option between a minimum of one year in Jail or indentured servitude to the state in work camps.
The GOP passed barbaric legislation to eliminate an entire elected position, rather than allow a duly elected exonerated black man to be sworn in and reform the system that took nearly three decades of his life.
We’ve been subject to a national guard deployment and ICE roundups with unprecedented brutality. Black sites where migrants disappear across rural Louisiana. A new plan to hold migrants at Angola — Louisiana’s most notorious prison. And jail time for: driving someone over state lines for an abortion, ordering abortion pills, and even for out of state OBGYNs.
The far-right’s model is simple: they test their most extreme policies here and if they can get away with them they begin introducing them across the nation.
That’s why they just declared a ‘State of Emergency’ to cancel our Congressional election. They want to see if the court will let it fly. They want to see if voters get outraged or if the news flies under the radar. If they get away with it, they’ll use the same playbook to cancel the midterms.
Louisiana is the frontline. Everything depends on us stopping them here but we are among the least funded Democratic parties in the nation. The only way we survive this is if we rapidly become one of the most funded.
