John, my family and I know firsthand the sacrifices that our men and women in uniform make to protect our freedom. In 2004, our son Humayun Khan lost his life defending our country while deployed in Iraq -- where he was fighting bravely for a united America, and for a more perfect union in this country that we love so dearly. Humayun gave his life fighting for our democracy because he believed deeply in putting country above self and defending our shared American values: integrity, equality, and progress.

Not a day goes by that I don’t miss Humayun, John -- but I vowed that my son’s sacrifice would not be in vain. And though I am reminded incessantly of the threats to American democracy that lie in plain sight, I’m also keeping my focus on November -- when we collectively have tremendous power to effect positive change for our country.

Winning critical races up and down the ballot won’t be easy, John -- but it will be important in continuing Humayun’s fight for progress.
