Paxton Targets ‘Secret’ Meeting Benefiting Islamic Development Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against a North Texas municipal utility district and its leadership, accusing them of secretly orchestrating an illegal takeover tied to the controversial East Plano Islamic Center’s EPIC City development. Sydnie Henry has the details [[link removed]].
Paxton alleges that Double R Municipal Utility District No. 2A of Hunt and Collin Counties violated the Texas Open Meetings Act during a September 12, 2025, meeting in which a new board was installed. The new board later annexed property to serve the proposed Islamic community.
The attorney general's lawsuit seeks to formally void that annexation and other actions taken by the new board. 53,000 More Texas Students Awarded School Choice Funding Brandon Waltens reports [[link removed]] that more than 53,000 additional Texas students will receive notice this week that they have been accepted into the state's new school choice program. The newly awarded students qualified under Tier 2, which includes families earning at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level—roughly $66,000 annually for a family of four.
The latest round builds on more than 42,600 students in the program’s top priority tier—students with disabilities and their siblings—who were already awarded funding last month.
Demand for the program far exceeds available funding, which was set at $1 billion for the program’s first year. More than 274,000 applications were submitted during the initial application window.
Families must decide by July 15 if they will accept funding. If they decline the awards, it would go to students on the waitlist. Voters Approve Billions in New Debt During the local elections on Saturday, Addie Hovland reports [[link removed]] that seven of the ten largest school debt packages passed, with two others partially passing. Only one failed to receive voter approval.
Nearly $17.5 billion in new debt was approved by voters, which taxpayers will be required to repay through their property tax burdens.
Dallas ISD has now set the record for the largest school bond passed by voters in Texas history. Packaged as four different propositions focused on districtwide upgrades to various facilities, the total bill comes to $6.2 billion in new debt.

With no GOP candidate for attorney general having received 50 percent of the vote in the March primary, the top-two vote-getters are squaring off in the May 26 runoff.
Yesterday, we asked readers if they were supporting Mayes Middleton or Chip Roy.
Here is a sampling of the responses we received.
“I've worked with Mayes for about 12 years, and on dozens of Republican priorities, in both the Texas House and Senate. He is a Republican stalwart and a consummate conservative fighter. He will be a spectacular AG.” – Chris Breaux
“Chip Roy has the experience & legal background to defend Texas, the State he loves.” – Merryl Redding
“Having engaged with Senator Middleton on higher education reform issues for the past several years, I have no doubt that his conservative views are deeply grounded and his plans for executing his vision are concrete.” – Matt Poling
“It will take someone like Chip Roy to keep the carpet baggers from turning Texas blue.” – Roy Leatherberry
“I am completely befuddled why TX Senator Middleton is running to be the top lawyer in Texas when he has never tried a case or been in a courtroom.” – Susan Valliant
“I find that Chip Roy is an opportunistic blowhard and overwhelmingly ineffective.” – Kenneth Gardner The Directory of State and Federal Officials
