That’s more than Ethiopia’s ENTIRE health budget. It’s also the amount debt vultures are suing Ethiopia for right here in the UK. And our government is letting them do it.

As huge global increases in energy and food prices combine with rising interest rates to push lower-income countries further into debt, speculators are scouring for opportunities to cash in. These debt vultures buy up the debts of countries like Ethiopia at rock bottom prices, then threaten to sue for large repayments in order to make vast profits.

Right now, the vultures are getting rich by draining national budgets, taking away resources from schools, hospitals, and essential public services. But nine in ten of the debt contracts between lower-income countries and private lenders are overseen by UK law.

Together, we can help stop countries like Ethiopia from being forced to choose between debt repayments and essential services. A new law here could stop the debt vultures – and help countries in crisis get debt cancelled. It’s time to build the momentum needed that will change the story on the debt crisis.

The UK will soon take over the presidency of the G20 - a self-selected group of countries dominated by rich nations. During the pandemic, the G20 set up a process that is supposed to help countries in crisis get debt cancelled. So far, it’s failed to deliver.

A debt justice law now would show that the UK is serious about tackling inequality and could help unlock action by other wealthy nations too. Let’s make sure the urgent need for action on the debt crisis is at the top of MPs’ inboxes.

Together, we can force the government to take action to stop the debt vultures and free up vital funds for governments to support their people, invest in education and healthcare, and tackle the climate crisis. For the millions living in countries in debt crisis, the impact would be massive.
