Sept. 1: Save Chick-fil-A Religious Freedom Law, Pro-Life Laws Take Effect

This coming Sunday, September 1st will see numerous new pro-family laws that passed during the 86th Texas Legislative Session go into effect. September 1st, after a state legislative session, is a general date when most new laws go into effect - putting many local governments on notice concerning new laws on faith, family, and freedom. One of the most talked-about issues and pieces of legislation during the session was the Save Chick-fil-A Religious Freedom Law supported by Texas Values.

The Save Chick-fil-A Religious Freedom Law, SB 1978, which passed with bipartisan support, protects all Texans, not just Chick-fil-A. The law ensures, just as the First Amendment intended, that no one is discriminated against by the government for associating with, or donating to, a religious organization. Other important pro-life laws supported by Texas Values that go into effect on Sept. 1 include SB 22, which prohibits transactions between a governmental entity and an abortion provider or affiliate, and HB 16, the Texas Born Alive Infant Protection Act protecting the life of babies who are born alive after surviving an abortion attempt.

Austin Proposes Budget that Forces Taxpayers to Fund Access to Abortion

While Austin ISD is busy trying to push radical Planned Parenthood-modeled sex education on children, the City of Austin is looking for new ways to force Austin taxpayers to subsidize abortion. Austin’s new proposed budget includes a donation of $150,000 in taxpayer funds to programs that give special “services” and special “assistance” to women seeking an abortion.

Our own Policy Director, Nicole Hudgens, and Policy Advisor, Mary Elizabeth Castle, both testified late Wednesday night in strong opposition to the proposed taxpayer funding of abortion access. Austin city leaders need to hear from those who disagree with their taxpayer dollars being used to financially support abortion. Taxpayer dollars should never be used to fund, assist with, or in any way endorse the killing of preborn children.

WATCH: AISD Sex-Ed Townhall

Texas Values attended the Austin ISD Board meeting this week that was packed with parents and citizens commenting about the district’s consideration of a new sex education curriculum. We continue to work to equip and educate local parents on this issue. Last week, Texas Values hosted a town hall to inform parents about the radical content of AISD's sex-education curriculum and the lack of transparency with parents. View the townhall.
