Liberal Democrats

Welcome to your August newsletter!

Parliament may be in recess, but the Liberal Democrats have still had a jam-packed month. We're in the last leg of the leadership election, with the winner due to be announced on the 27th of August (exciting!); we've opened registrations for our very first online conference; and we've taken on the Tories over refugees, stop and search, and their mishandling of the coronavirus crisis. Find out about all this and more in your edition of the Liberal Democrats newsletter.

Many young voters were, and continue to be, deeply affected by the cuts to public services and other austerity measures. In this leadership election, we have a chance to change. We have a chance to break away from the coalition and start to rebuild trust, with a vision to move both the party and our country forward.

Ed Davey addresses a crowd
There are no quick fixes to rebuilding our party

"A lot of the work the next leader will have to do isn’t exciting, it won’t be front page news but it’s absolutely critical to our future success and will take hard work and graft. Fortunately, I’ve spent my life rising to challenges and have never been scared of a bit of graft.

From when I was a young carer to my Mum, to when I won Kingston by 56 votes in 1997 when it wasn’t even a target seat, to beating the Tories in Government and more than trebling renewable energy, I’ve never backed down from a big challenge."

Important: don't forget to vote

John, don't forget to cast your vote for our next leader. Either Ed Davey or Layla Moran will be the face of our party for years to come and your vote could choose who it is.

If you haven't had your ballot yet, please email [email protected] and the team will be happy to help!

You can find more info on the voting process here: libdems.org.uk/leadership-election-ballots

Don't let the Tories make refugees the enemy

Boris Johnson and the Conservatives want us to turn our attention away from how they’ve failed our country, and towards refugees. But they’re failing refugees, too.

Protecting jobs

With the news that the UK has dipped into a recession, protecting jobs during the pandemic has become more important than ever. Liberal Democrats have been fighting to make sure people do not feel left behind as the country slowly recovers. We cannot allow this to create a new wave of inequality in Britain; the damage done to businesses and jobs falls harder on some than others. Check out five ways we've fought to protect jobs and make sure no-one is left behind:

Giving our COVID heroes the right to stay

About 1 in 7 NHS workers and 1 in 6 social care workers are foreign nationals. During this coronavirus crisis it's become clearer than ever that these staff are huge assets to our country. But despite their service, the Conservatives won't give them indefinite leave to remain in the UK - otherwise known as the right to stay. We're calling on the government to give all foreign nationals working in health and social care the right to stay.

Ending suspicion-less stop and search

For many of us, it's hard to believe that we could be stopped and search by a police officer with absolutely no suspicion that we're carrying anything illegal. But for many Black men, that's their reality. We're standing in solidarity with the Black British community and fighting to end suspicion-less stop and search. We've put together a Q&A about the reality of stop and search, and why it's vital we stop it.
