Just over one week after a devastating explosion shook Beirut on August 4, 2020, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams are on the ground providing wound care for people suffering from injuries, continuity of care for patients being treated for chronic diseases, and mental health care for individuals affected by the disaster. The explosion ripped through Beirut’s port and sent shockwaves across the city, killing more than 150 people and injuring more than 6,000. The blast stunned a nation already reeling from an economic crisis and a surge in COVID-19 infections. “Since then, there has been a very steep rise in reported COVID-19 cases in Lebanon, especially in Beirut,” said MSF head of mission Julien
Raickman. “We’re trying to see how to best adapt our projects under such circumstances.” MSF is also working with local civil society groups that have played an impressive role in responding to the disaster. Read more. |
