It has been four days since Louisiana’s MAGA governor declared a “State of Emergency” to stop our upcoming congressional election.

Following Wednesday’s SCOTUS decision to gut the legislation that ended segregation, the Louisiana GOP has launched a whirlwind assault on democracy to cancel our congressional elections and draw new Jim Crow style maps that disenfranchise black voters.

But with an election already underway and mail ballots already being cast, the only option for MAGA was to declare a “State of Emergency.” However, the Louisiana Democratic Party is not going down without a fight. 

One of the most troubling implications of this “emergency” is that many voters think that all May 16th elections have been called off. This is not the case: only the Congressional elections have been suspended. Unless we act, this will have devastating consequences. No Democrats will show up to vote in the critical election. 

We need to text, call, and meet every Democratic voter where they are at, to ensure they do not throw out their absentee ballots and make plans to vote in spite of MAGA’s disinformation campaign. 

We are among the least funded state Democratic parties in the nation but amidst this crisis we made a difficult decision — to spend money we don’t have on an unprecedented voter outreach effort to ensure these voters know there is still an election happening. 

In the past few days, tens of thousands of Democrats from every corner of this nation have rushed to our aid. We are banking on this critical support continuing. God help us if it doesn’t.

Louisiana Democrats are at the epicenter of the fight against fascism. We either stop them here or there is a real chance that they continue escalating like this until we don’t have midterms in November. Please, rush a donation of what you can.
