Justice Elena Kagan forcefully dissented. “I dissent because the Court’s decision will set back the foundational right Congress granted of racial equality in electoral opportunity,” she wrote.
University of Florida political scientist Michael McDonald also pointed out, “my quick read of Callais decision is that the majority says if a racial community votes consistently with a party, then it is okay to deny them representation because that’s just partisan gerrymandering.”
The consequences are simple to understand and grave for voter participation. The more vengeful partisans make voter participation feel worthless, the less people actually take part. Needless to say, the less people who participate, the less our democracy and our government looks like the people it's supposed to represent.
It was clear long before the MAGA movement that Chief Justice Roberts has seen the removal of the VRA as one of his top goals for his time on the Court. After decades of different cases, yesterday he seemed to finally succeed.
We simply refuse to let our democracy go backwards like this. Will you chip in with $35 or more to stand with us against these partisan efforts to silence voters? >>
