Friend,

Before the Voting Rights Act , minorities had virtually no say in our federal government. Decades of racist and discriminatory laws kept Black Americans from voting — and even when they did, the votes of minority communities weren’t given equal weight as other Americans.

You probably know the story of how it all changed in 1965. Martin Luther King Jr., Congressman John Lewis, and other towering figures of the Civil Rights Movement put their lives on the line as they marched in Selma, Alabama to demand equal voting rights for all Americans. And soon after, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law, officially prohibiting any election practice that denies the right to vote on account of race.

There have been quite a few amendments to the VRA in the years since. But this week, Donald Trump’s Supreme Court made a decision that changes it again — and takes a huge step BACKWARD for minorities voting rights.

Their new ruling means that Republicans will be allowed to draw voting districts that don’t take into account minority communities, essentially silencing large swaths of the population just like they did before the Voting Rights Act was signed into law.

The decision is a blatant regression of our civil rights. And frankly, it never should’ve happened — but our current court system is so messed up that Donald Trump and his extremists have been able to infiltrate even the most sacrosanct pillars of our democracy. We desperately need term limits and an expanded court so this can’t happen again.

This is what’s at stake as we vote this year: Not just who our representatives are right now, but whether this country chooses to continue the work toward a truly fair and equal democracy that serves all Americans, or lets extremists tear down everything that we are supposed to stand for.

We have to let them know we won’t go back. We have to fight — to keep moving forward. I hope you’re in this fight with me.

—Antonio
