The Supreme Court’s decision to strip protections guaranteeing voters of color the fair representation they deserve is already rippling into battleground states nationwide.Â
And now, Arizona is one of them.
The Senate president in Arizona has discussed pursuing a legal challenge to the state’s current map, a move to dilute — or potentially eliminate — Latino voting power.
Look: Arizona has two congressional districts and seven state legislative districts that are majority-Latino. And some Republicans see this week’s Supreme Court ruling as an invitation to weaken or outright eliminate Latino representation.Â
This is horrifying — and it’s the kind of cynical garbage we should expect now that the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act.
As if that weren’t bad enough, Arizona isn’t the only state attempting power plays in the wake of this ruling. Florida passed their new gerrymander the same day the ruling was handed down, and there have been rumblings about rapid redraws in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.
Folks, the scale of the fight we’re up against is unprecedented — and our budgets must be too. This is a time for all hands on deck.
