Email from Louisiana Democrats Six unelected judges in robes decided that Black voices are unconstitutional. This is segregation by map. It is Jim Crow with a gavel. John, My name is Cleo Fields. I represent Louisiana's 6th Congressional District. And earlier this week, the United States Supreme Court put a target on my back. In a 6-3 decision, the court's MAGA majority declared that my district is unconstitutional. They gutted Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, the protection that Civil Rights leaders gave their blood to secure. Six unelected judges in robes decided that Black voices are unconstitutional. This is segregation by map. It is Jim Crow with a gavel. This decision tears open wounds that have never fully healed. The Voting Rights Act was born from Selma. From Birmingham. From the Canal Street sit-ins in New Orleans and the 106-mile march from Bogalusa to the steps of this Capitol. John Lewis bled on that bridge. Medgar Evers was assassinated in his driveway. Dr. King gave his life. Fannie Lou Hamer stood before the world and declared she was sick and tired of being sick and tired. They gave everything so Black Americans would never again be stripped of their voice. And now Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry wants to suspend Louisiana's upcoming congressional elections on May 16th so he can silence the Black voters that I represent before the 2026 midterm elections. Early voting is already underway. Louisianans are casting ballots at this very moment. He wants to throw those votes in the trash and rush a new gerrymandered map through the legislature before anyone can stop him. All to erase a majority-Black district and to silence the voters who sent me to Congress. They have done everything in their power to make sure Black Louisianans do not have a seat at the table. They will not succeed. I have fought this fight before and I will fight it again. The torch that the Civil Rights Movement passed to us is still burning and I refuse to let it go out. But I cannot do this alone. MAGA is moving heaven and earth to try and erase my district and silence the voters I represent. I need Democrats everywhere to help me carry the torch.
