One Every Three Minutes Campaign
Day 6:  Latest Shocking Abortion Stats

Dear Friend and Supporter,

The Abortion Act has been in force now for 52 years.

In that time, more than nine million unborn babies have been brutally, unjustifiably, but legally killed by abortion in this country.

And each year, two hundred thousand more or so dead babies are added to that grim statistic.

UK abortions are accelerating rapidly

The shocking reality is that:
  • Every working day in Britain, 600 unborn babies are killed by abortion

  • That’s one every three minutes.

When access to abortion is made easier – as happened in December 2018 when England followed Scotland and Wales in sanctioning women to take a pill to complete their medical abortions unsupervised at home – abortions increase.

We know it, and our opponents know it too.

That is why they remorselessly press on with their plans, making it easier and easier for women to become entangled in their miserable web of abortion.

So, with the release of new Department of Health and Social Care abortion figures, in June, it came as no surprise to learn that a new low point in the killing had been reached.

Official statistics show that 209,519 unborn babies were killed in England and Wales by abortion in 2019.

This is the highest ever number since the Abortion Act was introduced in 1967.

And with the introduction of “temporary” DIY abortions in March, this ugly statistic is set to rise further still in 2020.

The “emergency” Covid-19 measures mean that women can now take both the pills in a medical abortion in the privacy of their home.

The first pill to kill the baby, and the second to expel its bodily remains.

Under the current coronavirus measures…

  • Abortion pills can now be obtained for free online via Skype video interview

  • A visit to the doctors or a clinic is no longer required

  • The whole process, from start-to-finish, can be completed in just a couple of days.

Abortion access doesn’t get much easier than that.

But that isn't to say that the whole matter is soon over and done with for the women concerned.

Far from it.

Quick they may be, but DIY abortions are proving to be neither simple nor safe.

This leaked NHS email makes it abundantly clear that there are major problems with the Government’s “emergency” Covid-19 DIY medical abortion policy.

At least 13 serious incidents have been referred to the Care Quality Commission (CQC) the independent regulator which oversees “TOP” (termination of pregnancy) procedures in the UK.

These include the deaths of two women, although it is not clear if these women took both pills at home.

The Government cannot say that it wasn't warned.

On 24 April, SPUC wrote to Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health, along with Jeane Freeman, Scotland’s Cabinet Secretary for Health, detailing a list of serious concerns with the DIY abortion scheme and requesting its immediate withdrawal.

We asked:

Tragically for the victims of DIY abortions, those who could have stepped in and protected them chose to ignore the warnings.

In the eyes of the abortion zealots, Choice is King.
For them, the misery and pain of the women who are needlessly falling foul of the reckless DIY abortion protocols is simply collateral damage to be tolerated.

After all, they are only “small numbers” and they must not be allowed to stop the “greater impact on women and girls choices” which DIY abortion schemes are offering.

Indeed, nothing can be allowed to stand in the way of the "greater good" which is abortion-on-demand.

How can the NHS unquestioningly accept the abortion industry’s mantra of “choice” as non-negotiable, whilst refusing to accept the warnings from the pro-life side?

It is becoming all too apparent that those responsible for providing health services can no longer be trusted with the medical welfare of women and girls.

A big part of what SPUC does is about getting the truth out to women so they are not taken in by abortion propaganda.

Raising awareness through TRUTH is how change is forged

It’s how we will help women throw off the yoke of legal abortion which has been oppressing them for over 50 years.

SPUC needs your help to deliver the truth to women in many ways including:
  • Leaflets delivered through front doors
  • News broadcasts and newspapers stories sparked by SPUC press releases.

And SPUC’s network of UK branches organise pro-life “chains” where shoppers and others can discuss abortion and hear a perspective they may never have before considered .

A growing audience of women of all types and backgrounds are being reached on Twitter and Facebook.

Members of SPUC’s Communications team make frequent appearances in the media challenging the misconceptions and lies which lull women into wrongly believing that abortion is simple and safe, and is their “friend”.

How you can help

My sincerest appreciation goes to every one of you who has contributed to SPUC's summer fundraising campaign.

This gives us great encouragement as we prepare for the upcoming battles to (1) repeal abortion in Northern Ireland and (2) block our opponents' attempts to make "temporary" DIY abortions "permanent".

If you've not yet donated, could I say how critical your help is?

Without it, SPUC cannot guarantee that the vital message of truth is spread.

Flagrant propaganda has come to characterise popular media “culture” in Britain today, and we simply MUST challenge it or more lives will be lost.

From pro-abortion story lines in the soaps, to adverts for abortions in glossy magazines aimed at girls and at women, the culture of death is everywhere around us.

Cutting through the dross and effectively countering the abortion propaganda requires a substantial investment each year in salaries, media training, specialist equipment and other broadcasting costs.

Covid-19 is taking its toll

But essential expenses like these are becoming increasing difficult to cover.

Lockdown restrictions mean that many church collections for SPUC cannot be taken up.

This is wiping out a vital source of funding.

Lost income in the region of £250,000 is expected as a result.

Unlike our main opponents we do not receive one penny in government grants.  Nor do we qualify for Lottery money and other similar sources of publicly-funded income.

That’s why I am turning to you today.

Will you help us get our message out to journalists so that we can fight pro-abortion bias in the media and create a level-playing field for the pro-life side in the press, and on popular social media platforms?

Will you help ensure that SPUC’s talented communication’s team CONTINUE speaking out on radio and TV on behalf our babies and their mothers?

Will you help ensure that SPUC’s capacity to fight plans for turning “temporary” DIY home abortion measures into “permanent” ones is not diminished by a devastating cash-crisis which could be avoided if everyone reading this email gave a little today?
  • A regularly monthly contribution of £10 per month [or increasing your existing Direct Debit contribution to SPUC by that same amount] would guarantee our babies the voice that they deserve long into the future
If you are unable to set up a regular donation, perhaps you would consider donating £15 or possibly £25 or £100 or £500 or £1,000 or more with your credit or debit card today, if you are in a position to do so.

An unborn child is killed every three minutes in Britain

Worryingly, that time period is set to shorten unless strong action is taken immediately.

“Permanent” DIY home abortions and the radical new “abortion framework” imposed on Northern Ireland—are pushing up the killing rate as never before.

Crushing the conscientious objection rights of pro-life doctors and nurses is all part of the same diabolical plan to decriminalise abortion in England, Scotland and Wales too.

SPUC needs your help to stop these abuses from happening.

That is why I must urge you to take a step forward and pledge a few pounds for our babies today.

Even £10 will make a difference for the good and add to our strength.

Thank you for standing up for life when so many others look the other way.

I cannot tell you how grateful I am for your continued support, and for all that you do to help protect our babies.

Yours in defence of life

John Smeaton
Chief Executive

PS:  The more people that get involved in this fight, the stronger the movement becomes.  Our babies need more people like you on their side.

Please tell your pro-life friends and family about the dangers our babies and their mothers face, today.

Only by joining forces and building up our numbers can we to put an end to the senseless slaughter.
