Email from Rep. McCaul A Harrowing Night at the White House Correspondents' Dinner Last weekend, as journalists, congress members, and administration officials gathered at the Washington Hilton to recognize the importance of a free press, a deranged individual attempted to storm the ballroom and kill President Trump and others. Thankfully, the brave Secret Service members jumped into action, subduing the suspect before he even made it to the ballroom door. I was seated at Bloomberg's table in the ballroom when I heard the shots ring out and saw the Secret Service rush to protect the president. Soon afterwards, Capitol Police came to escort me home in an emergency vehicle. While I'm incredibly grateful for law enforcement's quick response, I'm also saddened at the violence and hate we are seeing today. On Sunday morning, I joined "Bloomberg This Weekend" to discuss the need for lowering the temperature and to share my thoughts on security at the venue. Click below to watch the full interview. As chairman of the Homeland Security Committee's "Task Force on Securing the Homeland Amidst Special Events," I have been laser-focused on security preparations for these games. As transnational gangs and nation-state adversaries increasingly use unmanned aircraft systems — or drones — to carry out attacks around the world, we must do everything in our power to secure the airspace over our 11 U.S. host cities. That's why this week, I wrote to Secretary Hegseth, Acting Attorney General Blanche, and Secretary Mullin, urging the administration to empower the National Guard to counter drone-related threats. With its rapid deployability and extensive experience responding to domestic emergencies, the National Guard is uniquely positioned to assist with drone mitigation and unified coordination for World Cup security. I am also incredibly glad that yesterday, the House passed a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security, which is critical for closing security gaps ahead of our upcoming FIFA World Cup games. Despite Democrats' attempts to play political games by removing ICE and CBP funding, I am also relieved this bill funded CBP's National Targeting Center, which works to identify and stop travelers and cargo that pose a threat to our nation. As chairman of the Special Events Task Force, I will continue doing everything in my power to ensure these games are fun and safe for everyone involved. Our next order of business must be funding CBP and ICE — including ICE's crucial Homeland Security Investigations office, which leads essential anti-human trafficking efforts at large-scale sporting events. ICYMI: Rep. McCaul TV Coverage McCaul on Fox News' "America Reports" discussing the correspondents' dinner: "I did see Secret Service really spring into action and take the president of the United States and the vice president off the head table stage. We saw them get up on the stage to protect everybody in the audience. We saw them taking cabinet members out. And then finally the Capitol police came up to myself and other members and got us into emergency vehicles." Click to watch McCaul on CNN's "Situation Room" discussing the correspondents' dinner: "When I go to, say, the Munich Security Conference, there are magnetometers outside the hotel before you even go into the hotel. That was not the case at the Hilton hotel. So in other words, there was a soft perimeter... where anybody with an ID can walk in. ... So you had a lot of people that could go in all the way up to where the ballroom was before they hit a magnetometer. I would argue that's one issue that is of concern to me." Click to watch McCaul on CNN's "State of the Union" discussing the correspondents' dinner: "The takeaway I got was the line of succession. You had the president and the vice president at the head table — both of them together — and the speaker of the house. Had an explosive device gone off, you would have knocked out the three in the line of succession. I think the Secret Service needs to reconsider having both the president and vice president together at something like that [with a soft perimeter]." Click to watch McCaul on "Bloomberg This Weekend" discussing the latest in Iran: "I'm not very sanguine under this regime in Iran that you're going to have [a good deal] in the short term. I applaud the president for not hitting civilian infrastructure ... I think this is the right path; I know the markets have responded very well. I don't think it's in anyone's best interest to see the war drag on." Click to watch McCaul on "Fox News Live" discussing the latest in Iran: "I've been a critic of the Iranian regime for years — really since 1979 — and I don't think they're negotiating in good faith. ... They're never going to give up their nuclear capabilities at the end of the day. All presidents before [Trump] after 1979 have said, 'We will not allow a nuclear Iran.' But this president has stepped into Iran in a very courageous way to stop it, so I applaud him for that."
