Dear Friends,

My school anti-grooming bill, designed to stop grooming in Minnesota schools, is one step closer to becoming law in the State of Minnesota. This week, the bill was approved unanimously on the House floor and now heads to the Minnesota Senate for further discussion.

The bill strengthens protection for students against sexual grooming by providing clear field trip supervision rules, improving mandatory reporting and mandated reporter training to include grooming, and creating a new felony penalty for grooming. It also allows grooming of children and youth to become a more chargeable and recognizable offense.

I’ve been working on this legislation for several months with the help of a young woman and school grooming/sexual assault victim, Hannah LoPresto, and Detective Chad Clausen of the Eagan Police Department. They have been amazing advocates and I’ve been so thankful for their input and support. The bill has been before five different committees in the House throughout this process. There is still more work with the Senate to do to get this done, but it’s getting close!

I am very passionate about this issue. We must do what we can to protect our kids from sexual predators and this bill does just that. The vast majority of educators and school staff would never think of grooming or sexually abusing a child. I honor their wonderful work to educate and build healthy relationships with students. But to the sexual predators out there who go after our children and use our school as their own personal opportunity zone, I want this bill to put them on notice: “We’re coming after you. Stay away from our children!”

*LOCAL VISITORS*

It was great to have these local Albert Lea Firefighters come visit the Capitol this week!

Firefighters are among my favorite people - our local heroes who keep us and our property safe. Unfortunately, I couldn't spend much time with them because of floor session, but one issue we did touch on is the importance of local control for ambulance service. Both timely and quality ambulance service is incredibly important, and definitely an issue in our rural areas. Our state needs to fix this problem. Thank you to Fire Chief Jeff Laskowske, Deputy Fire Chief Bart Berven, and Captain Dennis Glassel for taking the time to visit with me!

Have a good weekend,

Peggy
