Donald Trump is destroying one of the country's oldest and most essential
institutions -- the US Postal Service -- all to suppress the vote and
prevent people from voting by mail.

Trump literally just admitted on Fox News that he was refusing to fund the
post office in order to stop the delivery of absentee ballots. Now the
mega donor Trump installed as postmaster general is firing career postal
executives, canceling overtime, and freezing all hiring to make sure that
the mail doesn't run on time.(1)

Trump's interference with the US Postal Service could cause millions of
ballots to go undelivered and uncounted, especially in California, where
20 million ballots are about to be mailed to voters. We're collecting
signatures and helping to fuel the uproar over our broken mail system to
drive Congress to take action now.

It's like something out of a dystopian novel.

In Oregon, there are reports of public mailboxes being removed from street
corners, and in several states, sorting machines are being dismantled.(2)

Elderly patients are waiting weeks for prescriptions to arrive. Letters
are left behind at facilities for days. Paychecks are delayed.(3)

Due to a Bush-era law, the US Postal Service had come to rely heavily on
overtime. More than 1 in 5 pieces of mail was delivered outside regular
hours. Now, with the postmaster general's order to stop all overtime and
freeze any new hires, that mail can’t be delivered at all.(4)

And the entire point is to stop people from exercising their right to vote
during the pandemic. Trump told Fox News that he’s blocking funding that
would keep the post office working -- “you can’t have universal mail-in
voting because [the post office is] not equipped to have it.”(5)

This is a nightmare for democracy, but instead of fixing it, Congress is
taking a vacation. Our representatives need to get back to work and stop
the assault on the post office.
