Dear John,
Yesterday’s Callais ruling — which destroyed what was left of the Voting
Right Act — was published at the same time that I was meeting, registering
and committing to work with new voters at Austin Community College.
It’s one of dozens of campuses across Texas where our Powered by People
volunteers are organizing to win political power in November.
If anything, this Supreme Court decision makes clear that we have to work
harder, stay longer, push through until we reach every eligible voter… a
personal conversation with each one about the stakes of this election… and
make sure they’re registered, and stay with them through Election Day.
We don’t control the Supreme Court (that’s Trump), but we do control how
we spend our days. And the volunteers I worked with at ACC are using this
time to build the political power to elect a Congress that will check this
court and empower an electorate that will replace MAGA authoritarianism
with a government of, by and for the people.
Those in power want us to feel overpowered, outgunned, defeated. And I
know many were tempted to despair yesterday. But this is our chance to
show them what we’re made of and what we can do.
Don’t complain, don’t wait for someone to save us, don’t distract yourself
with social media outrage. Nothing will get us out of this and into the
next round but the work.

to disenfranchise by gutting the Voting Rights Act, donate to support our
volunteers in the field who are doing just that.

All day yesterday we were meeting people who never got registered, whose
registrations lapsed, who were registered but never voted… and in every
case we got them ready to vote (registered and updated), had conversations
with them about what’s most important to them, connected that to voting
and then committed to staying in touch to help them with any question or
issue around voting and elections. And we will also be in touch every day
during early voting until we confirm they’ve cast their ballot.
We do this every day, all over Texas. Monday I joined our volunteers at
San Antonio College and UT San Antonio. Tuesday we were at Texas State in
San Marcos. And today I’ll meet up with our team at UT El Paso.
It’s a lot of work, but it works! Young Texas voters statewide in 2024:
37% turnout. Young Texas voters in our program in 2024: 79%.
Action is the antidote, the key to victory.
Keep pushing.
Beto
