Devastating news, John: The Supreme Court just dealt a major blow to the Voting Rights Act.

The Voting Rights Act has been a pillar of American democracy since 1965 — providing critical protections that generations of Americans put their lives on the line for so that every voter, no matter their race or ZIP code, gets to have a voice in our democracy. 

This ruling will have seismic effects on the ability of communities of color to be represented in the halls of power.

We are heartbroken and angry, but we aren’t wallowing in defeat. We’ve been preparing for this outcome and we aren’t wasting a single moment getting ready for the fight ahead. As we write this, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is pushing through a new extreme gerrymander — saying openly that the Supreme Court has given them cover to do so. We know other Republican-held states could quickly follow suit — and the result could be a tsunami of extreme gerrymanders and district lines that attempt to silence American voters.

Now that this ruling has come down, some experts believe that Republicans could redraw maps to steal more congressional seats in the months ahead. Put simply, if you thought that Donald Trump’s manufactured redistricting crisis was bad already, buckle up for what’s next.
