Email from Louisiana Democrats Using the greenlight given to them by SCOTUS, Louisiana Republicans are cancelling the election to accelerate the timeline for a Jim Crow redistrict of our state before Democrats can mount a defense. John, Yesterday, the MAGA-occupied Supreme Court issued a devastating ruling to gut the legislation that ended Jim Crow, the Voting Rights Act — the key federal protection that guaranteed minority representation in redistricting. Louisiana's 6th Congressional District, currently represented by Democrat Cleo Fields, was at the heart of this case. MAGA challenged the constitutionality of this majority-Black district and won, setting the stage for MAGA to wipe 25+ majority-Black districts off the map nationwide. Louisiana Republicans, empowered by this ruling, are now canceling our upcoming May 16th elections:  Using the greenlight given to them by SCOTUS, Louisiana Republicans are cancelling the election to accelerate the timeline for a Jim Crow redistrict of our state before Democrats can mount a defense. They will then hold a new election using the racist new maps. It’s a racist power grab that will drag our state back to the darkest days of segregation. Early voting is already underway for the May 16th elections. Ballots have been printed. Votes have been cast. Suspending this election means confusing voters, invalidating votes, reprinting new ballots, and sending 64 parishes into chaos—all to rush through a map that strips Black voters of their representation. Earlier this year, a Louisiana Democrat won by a landslide in a deep red Trump +13 district. The signs are becoming increasingly clear that a Democratic blue wave is coming to even deep red Louisiana. This is a last ditch attempt to ensure MAGA does not lose Louisiana. If they succeed with cancelling our election to stop our blue wave they lay the groundwork for cancelling the upcoming 2026 midterms to prevent a blue wave nationally. We are among the least funded Democratic parties in the nation and we are up against all of the resources of the National Republican Party.
