Will you sign this petition to protect the promise of Social Security for years to come?

On this day 85 years ago, in the midst of the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt made Social Security the law of the land.

The Social Security Act of 1935 was transformational for our country – ensuring that Americans could retire with dignity after a lifetime of hard work and sacrifice.

This week, in the midst of the greatest health and economic crisis our country has seen since the Great Depression, President Donald Trump has decided to undermine Social Security for millions of seniors.

This is outrageous. Millions of seniors and those living with disabilities are already feeling enormous stress during a pandemic that has isolated them from friends, family members, grandchildren and their normal routines. Like so many Americans, they are worried about the economy and making ends meet. They should not have to worry about their Social Security.

For nearly a century now, Social Security has been one of the most sacred promises we make to our seniors, our children, those living with disabilities and our veterans.

Donald Trump’s latest attacks cannot stand. Now, more than ever, we must fight to protect this critical safety net for the men and women who have worked their whole lives in order to retire with independence.

My friend Joe Biden agrees. He has called President Trump’s latest actions a “reckless war on Social Security.” He has a plan to actually protect seniors and the most vulnerable by boosting Social Security benefits and lowering the price of prescription drugs.

That’s the kind of leadership we need. Not a President who takes from our seniors to boost his own poll numbers.

On its 85th birthday, will you sign this petition to protect the promise of Social Security for years to come?

Thanks for staying in this fight,

Tom
