Yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling is a devastating rollback of our fundamental freedoms
Hi John,
Yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana v. Callais is a devastating rollback of our fundamental freedoms. By gutting Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA), the Court has dismantled the most vital tool we have for stopping discrimination and disenfranchisement against voters of color.
For more than 50 years, this law has helped make sure everyone has a fair say in their government. It has been the main tool used to stop discriminatory maps and voting practices and ensure that every community can elect leaders who actually represent them.
The impact of this ruling is both direct and dangerous:
- Millions of Native American, Black, and other voters of color have lost protection against discriminatory district maps.
- Without these protections, politicians can more easily redraw maps to silence the voices of certain communities.
- When people are blocked from voting, they lose the power to elect leaders who care about their health. This makes it much harder for those communities to fight back against pollution and climate change in their own neighborhoods.
History has shown that every major civil rights victory was born from a moment of crisis like this one. Our democracy is only as strong as the protections we provide for every voter.
On both the state and national level, we will continue to fight to enact policies that protect the freedom to vote, including pushing Congress to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act. These laws would restore the protections the Court just took away.
We will continue to fight until every voice is heard and every vote is protected.
