When I stood alongside Barack Obama in 2008 to accept my role as his running mate, I said I was ready to join him on his journey to win the White House.

And, John, what a journey it was.

We fought tooth and nail through a challenging general election campaign -- and no shortage of GOP smear campaigns and ugly attacks. But what ultimately carried Barack and me through it all was the support we received from folks around the country rooting us on, chipping in, and owning a piece of that campaign. And that same support is exactly what I am asking of you again today, John.

I'm writing to you to ask you to put your faith in Kamala Harris and me as we fight to restore the soul of America. And I know from personal experience that it's tough business joining the ticket as a nominee's pick for VP. This race will only get harder from here on out, which is why I need to ask you for a big favor today:

Will you split a $10 contribution between my campaign and the Democratic Unity Fund? According to my friends at the DNC, you haven't donated to my campaign before, so I hope you'll make your first gift in honor of Kamala Harris joining this race as my running mate. We'll need all the help we can get.

I'm not under any illusion that this race will get easier after next week's convention. In fact, history has shown us that this election will only become more contentious and challenging after Kamala and I officially accept our party's nomination in exactly one week.

I know all the resources it'll take to win this race, John, and I'm speaking candidly when I tell you that we simply aren't there yet. We're still short of the support we'll need to win in the toughest battlegrounds. But I have all the hope in the world that we still can get there if you're able to chip in for the first time today.

I'm asking for your financial support because I've been in Kamala's shoes -- and there's not a doubt in my mind that she'll have it even tougher than I did as she joins the ticket as my pick for vice president. There's never been a more consequential time to make your first donation to my campaign and our party, so I sincerely hope you'll chip in ahead of next week's convention. Not only for me, John, but for Kamala and for Democrats running difficult races in every corner of this nation.
